Enugu State political tensions rise over elections and representation
Political tensions are rising in Enugu State, Nigeria, involving electoral administration and representation. The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has threatened to boycott upcoming local government elections. The party accused the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) of political discrimination, alleging that the commission is withholding official electoral materials required for the party's candidates to participate.
Separately, calls have been made to the federal government and the Independent National Electoral Commission to restore the merged state constituencies in the Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area. It is alleged that the Uzo-Uwani South and North constituencies were merged in 1999, resulting in a single constituency representing 16 wards. Critics argue this merger has caused inadequate representation due to the large population and wide geographical spread.
