Nigeria Democratic Congress political tensions

Political tensions involving the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) have escalated across several Nigerian states. Initially, in Enugu State, the NDC threatened to boycott local government elections, accusing the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) of political discrimination by withholding necessary electoral materials. Concurrently, there were calls to restore merged state constituencies in the Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area to address representation issues.

By September, the situation expanded into reports of political violence as the party prepared for the 2027 general elections. In Rivers State, the NDC reported an attack on its secretariat in the Emohua Local Government Area, which resulted in the theft of items and the destruction of campaign materials. In Ebonyi State, the party alleged that a government official ordered the abduction and assault of an NDC supporter following online campaigning. These incidents led to calls for official resignations and heightened concerns regarding the safety of opposition members in the South East region.
