Regional health and environmental initiatives in Turkey and Northern Cyprus

Various regional initiatives in Turkey and Northern Cyprus are focusing on public health awareness, environmental sustainability, and urban management.

In response to World Alzheimer's Day, several seminars and panels were held in Northern Cyprus, Kahramanmaraş, Denizli, and Bursa. Experts emphasized that Alzheimer's symptoms can begin 15-20 years before clinical diagnosis. Discussions highlighted the importance of early detection, Mediterranean-style nutrition, physical activity, and managing chronic conditions to mitigate risks. In Turkey, it is estimated that approximately 700,000 people live with dementia, a figure projected to increase significantly by 2050 due to an aging population.

Environmental efforts are also underway, including tree-planting projects in Mersin to combat extreme heat through microclimate analysis, and various municipal cleaning campaigns in Selçuklu, Meram, and Iğdır. Additionally, local governments in Didim and Kepez are conducting maintenance on public parks and green spaces to improve urban living conditions. In Eskişehir, a new Farmer Support and Training Center (ÇİDEM) is being established to bolster rural development and agricultural education.
