Environmental cleanup efforts target waste in Friesland and Oosterschelde

In Friesland, approximately 1,840 volunteers participated in the Skjin Wetter initiative from October 3 to October 10. The campaign involved over 50 groups, including schools, canoe clubs, and local businesses, working to remove litter from streets, embankments, and waterways to prevent pollution.

Participants highlighted the significant impact of cigarette butts, noting that a single butt can contaminate drinking water for one person for 1.5 years. In the Netherlands, an estimated 7.1 billion cigarette butts enter the environment annually.

Separately, thousands of small plastic filters have washed up along the shores of the Oosterschelde between Bruinisse and the Grevelingen. Volunteers from the Bende van het Strand expressed concern regarding the impact of these filters on local wildlife, such as birds, fish, and seals, which may ingest the plastic. While a similar incident involving biofilters occurred in 2021, the origin of the current accumulation remains unknown, and local companies have stated they are not responsible for the current debris.
