Environmental cleanup initiatives launched at beaches in Peru and Chile

Environmental cleanup efforts have been conducted at various coastal locations in Peru and Chile to combat marine pollution and protect biodiversity.

In Peru, PERUPETRO organized cleaning sessions at Zorritos beach in Tumbes and Agua Dulce beach in Chorrillos, Lima. These activities, part of the company’s 2026 Volunteer Program, involved collaboration between employees, local authorities, fishermen, and students to remove solid waste from the coastline.

In Chile, authorities and volunteers conducted a cleanup at Los Gringos beach in Constitución, Maule Region. Led by officials from the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of National Assets, the operation collected cigarette butts, plastics, cans, and tires. Officials noted that cigarette butts account for approximately 13% of beach waste, while highlighting the long-term threat that plastics pose to marine ecosystems as they degrade into microplastics.
