Global coastal cleanup initiatives
Overview
Various international efforts have been launched to combat marine pollution through coastal cleanup activities. In late October 2026, initiatives were organized across several countries, including Spain, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Peru.
In Spain, the ‘Ola sin plástico’ association participated in the ‘Arena Limpia’ project, coordinating simultaneous cleanups across fifteen locations. In Argentina, municipal officials in Rawson organized a cleanup at Playa Unión to address debris such as plastics and fishing nets.
In Peru, PERUPETRO conducted cleaning sessions at Zorritos and Agua Dulce beaches involving employees, local authorities, and students. Meanwhile, in Chile, government ministries led operations at Los Gringos beach to remove waste including tires, cans, and plastics. Officials highlighted that cigarette butts constitute approximately 13% of beach waste and noted the ongoing threat of microplastics to marine ecosystems.
