Environmental initiatives drive reforestation efforts in Portugal

Various environmental restoration projects are underway across Portugal to combat biodiversity loss and climate change. In Guimarães, pilots participating in the Rally 6 Cities North of Portugal took part in a tree-planting initiative at Monte da Penha. Organized by the Guimarães City Council and the Irmandade da Penha, the action supports the city’s commitment as a European Green Capital for 2026 and its goal to reach climate neutrality by 2030. Participants planted strawberry trees (medronheiros) to support local biodiversity and provide food for native birds.

Separately, WWF Portugal has marked the first anniversary of its D-EVOLUÇÃO initiative by planting over 1,700 native trees and shrubs in the Peneda-Gerês National Park. The project has addressed 46 hectares of forest and habitats affected by wildfires, utilizing species such as oak, birch, holly, and Scots pine to stabilize habitats for species like the Iberian wolf and roe deer. The organization is also expanding restoration efforts to the Serra do Caldeirão and the Tagus Estuary to increase national resilience against wildfires and climate change.
