Portugal reforestation and carbon market initiatives
Overview
Portugal is advancing reforestation and forest management through both regulatory market expansions and localized environmental projects. The Ministry of Environment and Energy has expanded the country’s Voluntary Carbon Market (MVC) to include new methodologies for reforestation and improved forest management. This expansion is intended to attract private investment for nature-based solutions and increase carbon sequestration opportunities.
Complementing these market developments, various restoration efforts are active across the country. In Guimarães, tree-planting initiatives are supporting the city’s goal of climate neutrality by 2030. Additionally, WWF Portugal’s D-EVOLUÇÃO initiative has completed its first year, having planted over 1,700 native trees and shrubs in the Peneda-Gerês National Park to restore habitats affected by wildfires. These efforts are being extended to the Serra do Caldeirão and the Tagus Estuary to bolster national resilience against climate change.
