Italy environmental initiatives: waste management and conservation efforts

Various regions across Italy are implementing diverse environmental protection and waste management initiatives. In Piemonte, the regional government reported a historic milestone in 2025, with waste recycling rates reaching 69.4%. To sustain this momentum, the region has allocated 3.5 million euros for service improvements and plans to invest an additional 14 million euros by 2026 in waste prevention and recycling technologies.

In Palermo, the municipality has appointed 41 new environmental inspectors with the authority of public officials to combat illegal waste dumping, which saw an increase to approximately 1,500 tons per month in 2026. Additionally, the “Salvamare” project is concluding its three-year program aimed at protecting Sicilian river and marine ecosystems from plastic pollution.

Local community actions are also widespread. In Pisa, activists protested against urban development plans that threaten green spaces like the Bosco del Sanguigno. In Ladispoli, the administration organized a special day for the free collection of bulky waste. Other regional efforts include coastal cleanups in San Benedetto del Tronto and the Tirso river mouth in Torregrande, as well as community-led ecological cleaning days in Piobesi Torinese.
