Community environmental cleanup initiatives in Italy

Overview

Community-led environmental cleanup initiatives continue across Italy, blending grassroots activism with social reintegration programs. The national mobilization involving Plastic Free Onlus and Seconda Chance APS has progressed, with youth from the Nicola Fornelli juvenile detention center joining volunteers to clean Parco Perotti in Bari. Similar efforts involving detainees and volunteers have been reported in Livorno and Prato, Tuscany.

Coastal protection remains a priority. In Savona, a large-scale cleanup of the beach and promenade by groups including Legambiente, Plastic Free, and WWF resulted in the collection of approximately 100,000 pieces of plastic and polystyrene, alongside 2,500 cigarette butts and various larger debris such as a car radio and a traffic cone. All waste was sorted and removed by SEA-S.

Local administrative and community developments also persist. In Alghero, a new urban hygiene organization is implementing a door-to-door waste collection system. In Gela, the Caposoprano and Fondo Iozza neighborhood committee held its first assembly to discuss green spaces and road safety. Meanwhile, environmental protests have emerged regarding landfill expansions in Sulmona and Pietrasanta.
