Environmental monitoring and pollution control efforts in Mexico and Spain

Environmental authorities are addressing pollution and monitoring efforts in two distinct aquatic ecosystems. In Villahermosa, Mexico, the Laguna de las Ilusiones is facing significant contamination due to more than 10 major wastewater discharge points. These discharges, originating from residential areas, hospitals, and other lagoons, have caused wildlife mortality and high organic matter levels. To combat this, the Government of Tabasco has established an inter-institutional technical table involving Semarnat and Conagua to implement a rescue project. This plan includes redirecting water to a treatment plant, dredging, and oxygenating the basin using water from the Carrizal River.

In Spain, an automatic monitoring station has been deployed in the Laguna Negra, located in Vinuesa. The solar-powered buoy provides continuous data from the surface to a depth of approximately 8 meters, measuring temperature, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, and organic matter. This technology aims to track the ecological state of the glacial lake following previous alerts regarding eutrophication, which had previously led to the suspension of local swimming events.
