Overview

Environmental authorities in Mexico and Spain are implementing monitoring and pollution control measures in aquatic ecosystems.

In Villahermosa, Mexico, the Laguna de las Ilusiones is suffering from contamination caused by over 10 major wastewater discharge points from residential areas and hospitals, resulting in wildlife mortality. To address this, the Government of Tabasco, Semarnat, and Conagua have formed a technical table to execute a rescue project involving dredging, oxygenation via the Carrizal River, and water redirection to a treatment plant.

In Vinuesa, Spain, an automatic solar-powered monitoring station has been deployed in the Laguna Negra. The buoy tracks temperature, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, and organic matter at depths of approximately 8 meters to monitor the glacial lake’s ecological state following previous eutrophication alerts.
