Environmental pollution and regulatory complaints reported in Paraguay and Uruguay
Residents in Paraguay and Uruguay are reporting ongoing environmental issues and alleging regulatory failures regarding local industrial and agricultural activities.
In Paraguay, approximately 50 families near the Tape Porã asphalt plant in Yguazú claim to be living in a state of siege due to thick smoke and nauseating odors. Residents report that the pollution is affecting daily life and health, including a six-year-old child with chronic respiratory problems. Despite a judicial authorization for a raid by the specialized environmental crimes unit in June, locals claim no tangible changes or corrective measures have been implemented, leading to accusations of institutional passivity.
In Uruguay, near Guichón, neighbors have filed new complaints against a producer previously sanctioned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (MGAP). The new allegations involve irregular water canalization that causes flooding on neighboring properties and the use of agrochemicals near property lines. The drainage work reportedly directs herbicides into the Boquerón stream. Authorities have notified the accused to comply with the Water Code within ten days.
