Environmental pollution complaints in Paraguay and Uruguay

Overview

Residents in Paraguay and Uruguay are reporting environmental pollution and alleging regulatory failures regarding industrial and agricultural activities.

In Paraguay, families near the Tape Porã asphalt plant in Yguazú claim to be living in a “state of siege” due to thick smoke and nauseating odors. Residents report that the pollution is affecting health, including a child with chronic respiratory problems. Despite judicial authorization for a raid by environmental crime units in June, locals claim no corrective measures have been implemented, leading to accusations of institutional passivity.

In Uruguay, near Guichón, neighbors have filed complaints against a producer previously sanctioned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (MGAP). The allegations involve irregular water canalization causing flooding and the use of agrochemicals near property lines, which reportedly directs herbicides into the Boquerón stream. Authorities have notified the accused to comply with the Water Code within ten days.
