Environmental studies reveal microplastic and toxic chemical pollution risks

Recent environmental studies have identified significant sources of chemical and plastic pollution. Research conducted by scientists from the University of Plymouth and North Carolina State University highlights that abandoned offshore oil and gas pipelines are a major source of ocean microplastics. These pipelines, often left on the seabed, are coated with plastic layers for corrosion protection and thermal insulation. It is estimated that abandoned pipelines could generate between 4.5 and 509 tons of microplastics annually.

Separately, investigations into recycled plastic products have revealed the presence of hazardous chemicals. Studies show that toxic brominated flame retardants—substances often found in electronic waste—are appearing in products made from recycled materials. In Poland, laboratory analysis of toys and hair accessories found concentrations of OctaBDE and DecaBDE, which are classified as persistent organic pollutants under the Stockholm Convention. These chemicals are known to disrupt thyroid function and cause neurological deficits in children. Experts warn that while these substances are restricted in virgin plastics, they are being reintroduced into the market through the recycling process.
