Environmentalists protest CFE submarine power line project in Playa del Carmen

Environmental activists and citizen collectives in Playa del Carmen are protesting the start of construction by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) for a submarine transmission line connecting Playa del Carmen to Cozumel. The project, announced by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, is expected to pass through the Chankanaab area.

Activists from the Red por Chen Zubul expressed concern regarding the impact on the Chen Zubul site, which they describe as the last natural area in the Luis Donaldo Colosio neighborhood. The site covers more than 40 hectares. Members of the collective have challenged previous claims by CFE representatives that the area lacks biological richness, calling for independent environmental impact studies to prevent ecological damage.

Local residents have collected signatures and delivered them to project officials in Mérida, Yucatán, to request information and voice their opposition to the potential consequences of the infrastructure works.
