EOT España demands funding for authorized thyroid eye disease treatment

The Spanish Association of Patients with Thyroid Eye Disease (EOT España) is demanding that the Ministry of Health and autonomous communities rectify a decision to deny funding for teprotumumab. The drug is currently the only treatment authorized by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for thyroid eye disease (TED).

The association is calling for action during the next meeting of the Interministerial Commission on Drug Prices (CIPM), scheduled for September 23. EOT España argues that the refusal to fund the treatment on July 15 was an error that has negatively impacted patients' vision, social lives, and ability to work.

While the treatment has received approval from both the EMA and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), patients in Spain have reportedly been without therapeutic alternatives for months. EOT España president Pilar Carnicero stated, “We are not asking for a new opportunity, we demand that an error that has already cost patients dearly be corrected.”
