Epic Games to develop native Linux client for its store

Epic Games has confirmed that it is developing a native Linux client for the Epic Games Store. The announcement was made by an Epic employee during a community Discord AMA, stating that support is “coming soon.”

Developers clarified that the project involves more than just a simple port of the existing Windows launcher. The company is working on deeper architectural changes, including a transition to a new framework using Rust and Tauri, to ensure better integration with the Linux ecosystem. Consequently, the Linux version will not be included in the upcoming preview build.

While the native launcher aims to reduce reliance on third-party tools like the Heroic Games Launcher, significant technical hurdles remain. Specifically, the compatibility of Epic Online Services (EOS) anti-cheat software with Linux is a major concern. Without a solution for anti-cheat, popular multiplayer titles such as Fortnite may remain unavailable on the platform despite the new client.
