Linux gaming software development
Overview
The Linux gaming ecosystem has seen significant developments regarding native application support. NVIDIA has officially released its native GeForce NOW cloud gaming application for Linux, moving past the beta phase to provide a stable alternative to browser-based streaming via an official Flatpak repository. The release includes optimizations for DLSS Frame Generation to reduce latency at high resolutions and server-side enhancements for CPU-intensive titles. The service also targets Chromebook users to enable high-end gaming on educational hardware.
Following this, Epic Games confirmed that a native Linux client for the Epic Games Store is in development, with support described as “coming soon” during a community Discord AMA. Rather than a simple port, the company is working on deeper architectural changes, including a transition to a new framework using Rust and Tauri to ensure better integration with the Linux ecosystem. This new launcher may utilize Flatpak and include features for managing compatibility layers.
However, technical challenges remain. A major concern is whether Epic can port its Epic Online Services anti-cheat system to the platform. Without a solution for anti-cheat, popular multiplayer titles such as Fortnite may remain unavailable on Linux despite the introduction of a native client.
