Mexico-US relations tension rises amid cartel criticisms and high-profile arrest
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has responded to criticisms from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, asserting that Rubio's claims regarding Mexico's insufficient fight against drug cartels are politically motivated by the upcoming U.S. elections. Sheinbaum stated that Mexico should not be used as a 'piñata' in American political campaigns and emphasized that while Mexico will maintain bilateral coordination with the U.S., it will do so without subordinating its national sovereignty.
Rubio, speaking from Ecuador, argued that vast territories in Mexico are controlled by criminal organizations rather than the state, describing the current efforts as 'totally insufficient.' He warned that while collaboration is the ideal, the U.S. may eventually have to address the threat of these cartels independently.
In a separate security development, Mexican authorities, in coordination with U.S. intelligence, arrested Epifanio N, alias 'Pepa,' a regional leader for the 'La Línea' criminal group, in Manuel Ojinaga, Chihuahua. Epifanio N, who faces a provisional arrest warrant for extradition to the United States for drug trafficking and human smuggling, was apprehended alongside his son, Alejandro N. The operation also resulted in the seizure of five firearms, 16 magazines, 400 cartridges, and two vehicles.
