Equinor, Aker BP, and Vår Energi partner for major Norwegian oil exploration
Norway's three largest oil companies—Equinor, Aker BP, and Vår Energi—have announced a major collaborative exploration initiative on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Starting in 2028, the partnership aims to identify significant new energy finds through a four-to-five-year period. The companies plan to test approximately 20 to 25 exploration opportunities, with a target of drilling about five wells annually across the shelf, including the Barents Sea.
This move comes as the Norwegian Offshore Directorate warns of a sharp decline in production on the Norwegian shelf within four years, emphasizing the need for larger discoveries to maintain long-term output. Equinor CEO Anders Opedal highlighted the strategic importance of the region, noting that the Norwegian shelf provides 33 percent of Europe's gas and 20 percent of its oil, making it vital for European energy security amidst global conflicts.
Separately, debates continue regarding the impact of climate policy on the industry. While some critics suggest declining numbers of active companies signal a failure in climate policy, industry experts argue that the reduction reflects a maturing shelf and global consolidation rather than the impact of carbon quotas. They maintain that carbon pricing is designed to incentivize electrification and efficiency rather than to move resources away from the region.
