Norwegian offshore oil exploration activities
Overview
In the North Sea, Aker BP and Equinor reported the completion of a dry exploration well at the Svarteknippa prospect. The well, drilled by the Scarabeo 8 rig, encountered weak hydrocarbon indicators but failed to prove reservoir rocks in the secondary Draupne and Heather formations, leading to its permanent abandonment.
Following these individual drilling updates, Equinor, Aker BP, and Vår Energi announced a large-scale collaborative exploration initiative on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Scheduled to begin in 2028, the partnership intends to test 20 to 25 opportunities over several years, drilling approximately five wells annually to counter projected production declines on the Norwegian shelf. Equinor CEO Anders Opedal noted the strategic importance of the region, stating that the Norwegian shelf provides 33 percent of Europe’s gas and 20 percent of its oil.
In a separate development, Equinor and Aker BP discovered gas and condensate in the Linga area of the North Sea at the 25/7-13 exploration well. Located approximately 205 km west of Stavanger, the well encountered resources within the Draupne formation at a depth of 4,606 meters. Preliminary estimates suggest recoverable resources range between 0.1 and 2.1 million barrels of oil equivalent. The partners are currently reviewing drilling data and hydrocarbon samples to evaluate the potential for further development.
