Equinor doubles gas discovery estimates in the North Sea

Equinor has announced that the Afrodite discovery near the Kvitebjørn field in the North Sea is significantly larger than previously estimated. Following an appraisal well, recoverable amounts of gas and condensate are now projected to be between 77 and 180 million oil equivalents, more than doubling previous calculations.

The discovery, originally made in 2008 by Eni Norge, presents extraction challenges due to slow gas flow through the rock. However, Equinor considers the find commercially viable and is evaluating a subsea development linked to the Kvitebjørn platform. If developed, the gas could be transported via existing pipelines to the Kollsnes processing plant in Øygarden for distribution to the European market.
