Erdemir Romanya targets European electric vehicle market with specialized steel

Erdemir Romanya, an OYAK Maden Metalürji company, is positioning itself as a key supplier for Europe’s electric vehicle (EV) transition. The Bucharest-based facility has an annual production capacity of 150,000 tons, with 90 percent of its output exported to Europe and the United States.

During a recent visit to the plant, OYAK General Manager and Erdemir Chairman Murat Yalçıntaş met with Erdemir Romanya General Manager Doğan Güreş. The discussions highlighted the company’s specialization in high-quality Non-Grain Oriented (NGO) electrical steel, which is essential for the cores of electric motors and generators.

To meet the demands of the growing electrification and energy transition sectors, the company is focusing on developing “E-Car” steels. These products are designed to be thinner with lower magnetic losses for use in EV traction motors. Production capabilities have been further enhanced by integrating hot rolls developed at İsdemir, fostering technical synergy between OYAK Maden Metalürji companies.
