Turkish military undergoes major leadership reshuffle and promotions
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has signed a series of decrees resulting in a major reshuffle of the Turkish military and security leadership. The appointments, published in the Official Gazette, involve the reassignment of 205 generals and admirals across the Land, Naval, and Air Forces.
In the Gendarmerie General Command, 7 generals and 18 colonels have been promoted to higher ranks, with changes effective from August 30, 2026. Key appointments include the assignment of new commanders for the provincial gendarmerie units in Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir. Additionally, several high-ranking officers have been placed under the command of the Gendarmerie General Command.
The Coast Guard Command also saw significant changes, including the promotion of Rear Admiral Cengiz Fitoz to Commodore and the appointment of Colonel Önder Göksel as Operations Chief.
Separately, the Gendarmerie and Coast Guard Academy held a graduation ceremony for 5,915 personnel, including 1,142 officers and 4,773 non-commissioned officers. Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi attended the ceremony, emphasizing the role of these institutions in national security and the protection of the 'Blue Homeland'.
