Erdogan vows full support for Turkish Cypriots after UN meeting

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reaffirmed Ankara's complete backing for Turkish Cypriots, stating that Turkey will not abandon its "brotherly" community "at any cost" and will monitor any attempts to involve Cyprus in new military or geopolitical plans. His remarks followed a trilateral meeting in Nicosia on 29 July, attended by UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres, Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman and Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides.

Guterres reported that the parties agreed to convene a new "5+1" format meeting, bringing together the two Cypriot leaders, the guarantor powers (Turkey, Greece and the United Kingdom) and the United Nations, although no date was set. Erdogan warned that Turkey would closely watch any moves aimed at changing the status of the island and reiterated the need for recognition of the "sovereign equality" of the Turkish Cypriot community.
