Erias Lukwago denied bail, remains on remand in Uganda

Uganda’s High Court rejected former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago’s application for bail, ruling that the medical evidence presented was insufficient. Justice David Matovu noted that the medical report from Mulago National Referral Hospital had not been certified by the Uganda Prisons Service, a requirement for bail on health grounds. Lukwago, president of the People’s Front for Freedom, faces a charge of misprision of treason linked to an alleged plot to overthrow the government between 2021 and 2024, which he denies. Despite sureties from prominent MPs and other public figures, the court found no basis for release. The judge ordered the committal process to continue and the case to be assigned to a trial judge. Lukwago will remain detained at Luzira Prison while awaiting trial.
