Erion Veliaj faces High Court review over pre-trial detention
Erion Veliaj, the acting Mayor of Tirana, faces a critical legal proceeding on September 15 when the Albanian High Court reviews his case. This follows a decision by the Constitutional Court to re-examine the legality and proportionality of his pre-trial detention, which has lasted since February 2025.
Veliaj is currently facing allegations of corruption and money laundering, charges which he denies. His lawyer, Plarent Ndreca, has argued that the legal basis for his continued detention has fundamentally changed following the Constitutional Court's intervention.
The case has drawn international attention, with European Parliament member Sandro Gozi of the Renew Europe group questioning whether the continued detention is strictly necessary or excessive. Gozi emphasized that while the fight against corruption is essential for Albania's EU aspirations, it must be balanced with the rule of law and the presumption of innocence.
