Erion Veliaj dismisses Anuela Ristani as acting mayor of Tirana

Erion Veliaj, the Mayor of Tirana, has officially dismissed Anuela Ristani from her role as acting mayor. The decision, issued while Veliaj is currently in detention, revokes the powers previously delegated to Ristani to manage the municipality.

Veliaj cited several reasons for the dismissal, including Ristani’s failure to comply with direct orders, a lack of institutional coordination, and a failure to implement judicial decisions. Specifically, the decision notes her refusal to reinstate Secretary General Alban Dokushi following a court ruling. The municipality stated that the delegation of authority to Ristani was intended only as a temporary measure to ensure administrative continuity during Veliaj’s absence.

The move follows recent rulings by the Constitutional Court, which confirmed the legal continuity and constitutional protection of Veliaj’s mandate. Veliaj argued that the continued delegation of power had become an obstacle to the effective exercise of his mandate as the elected mayor, creating a breakdown in the chain of responsibility within the Tirana administration.
