Erion Veliaj facing potential release from detention on September 15

The legal case involving Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj has reached a critical stage. Veliaj has been in pre-trial detention since February 10, 2025, following the suspension of his mayoral competencies by the government.

Defense attorney Alban Duraj has predicted Veliaj’s release on September 15, suggesting the Mayor will return to his office. Duraj noted that recent unifying practices from the Supreme Court, which place the burden of proof on the prosecution and require the consideration of alternatives to prison arrest, could directly influence the upcoming judicial decision.
