Erkrath Multi-Family House Fire Injures 12 and Displaces 87 Residents
On 30 June 2026 a fire broke out in a kitchen of a multi‑family house on Eichendorffweg in Erkrath‑Hochdahl. The blaze quickly spread from the second‑floor apartment to the stairwell and balcony, reaching up to the fourth floor. Firefighters rescued 12 people from the building and treated five with smoke inhalation; eight of the injured, including three firefighters, were taken to nearby hospitals.
The fire destroyed the affected apartment, rendering the entire house uninhabitable. The six‑figure damage left all 87 tenants unable to return, prompting the local Red Cross to set up an emergency shelter for about 40 people. Investigations into the cause of the fire have been opened by the Mettmann police department.
