2026 fire wave continues across Germany (July)
Entities: Mannheim Fire Department · Celle fire brigade · Zederhaus Fire Department · German Fire Services · Austrian fire services
Overview
A heat‑driven wave of fires that began in April kept German fire services under strain throughout July. Early‑month blazes hit towns such as Alzenau, Gering, Attendorn, Mannheim, Salmtal and several agricultural sites. Industrial facilities were hit, including a pellet‑press in Hasbergen, the Westfleisch meat‑processing centre in Hamm, a wood‑construction plant in Eberhardzell and a neighbouring car dealership, together causing multi‑million‑euro damages.
Residential and multi‑family fires persisted, notably a cellar fire in Saarbrücken’s St Arnual district that forced the evacuation of 18 residents, and incidents in Ludwigsburg, Hutzdorf and across the Austrian border. Large property losses and smoke‑gas poisonings were reported in Kirn, Lahnstein and AIDHAUSEN (Nassach). Care‑facility fires continued, with earlier reports from Lindau, Westendorf and a Weimar home, and new incidents in Bavaria: a nursing‑home fire in Postbauer‑Heng injured five seniors with minor smoke inhalation and left part of the building unusable, while a senior residence in Markt Erlbach saw one fatality.
On 21 July a scrap‑metal shredder waste‑heap near Saalfeld ignited, producing thick smoke and prompting a population warning; about 100 firefighters from several municipalities contained the blaze and began dismantling the burning material. The same day a waste‑dump fire near Wöhlsdorf required a similar deployment of emergency personnel.
Additional incidents in late July included vehicle‑related fires: a parked car burned in a Friesoythe supermarket parking lot, a moorland blaze near Saterland, and a Mercedes fire in Rees. All were extinguished by local fire brigades with no civilian casualties, though an e‑scooter rider involved in a separate accident suffered severe injuries. These events further stretched resources, underscoring the compounded strain on fire‑fighting services across Germany and neighboring Austria.
