Ernesto Ruffo Appel challenges indictment and detention
Former Baja California Governor Ernesto Guillermo Ruffo Appel has filed an amparo lawsuit to challenge his indictment and the mandatory preventive detention currently in place. Ruffo Appel faces charges related to fuel smuggling and organized crime.
His legal defense requested a provisional suspension of the detention order to allow him to serve the process under house arrest. However, a federal judge in the State of Mexico partially granted the suspension only regarding his personal liberty status while the amparo process continues. The judge ruled that the request for house arrest could not be granted at this stage, meaning Ruffo Appel must remain incarcerated at the Altiplano Federal Social Readaptation Center (Cefereso 1) in Almoloya de Juárez.
