Eroski and other Spanish retailers adopt Bizum for in-store payments
Major Spanish retailers, including Eroski, Mercadona, and Carrefour, are expanding the use of Bizum as a physical in-store payment method. This service allows customers to pay for purchases directly from their bank accounts via mobile phone without needing a physical card.
Eroski has begun deploying the service in its Caprabo supermarkets in Catalonia, with plans for a progressive rollout across the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, depending on the availability of the service through various banking institutions. The implementation is currently limited to the group's food business and does not yet include Forum Sport stores or gas stations.
This move is part of a broader digital transformation strategy. Eroski allocated 21.14 million euros to innovation and development projects in 2025 and plans to invest over 100 million euros in technological transformation between 2024 and 2026. Meanwhile, Mercadona has also begun expanding the service following initial testing in Soria and other locations.
