ESA and ispace-Europe partner for MAGPIE lunar rover mission

The European Space Agency (ESA) and ispace-Europe have officially signed an agreement to develop MAGPIE (Mission for Advanced Geophysics and Polar Ice Exploration), the first European lunar rover. The agreement was formalized during a ceremony in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Scheduled for launch in 2029, the rover is designed to operate on the lunar South Pole for approximately ten Earth days. Its primary objective is to investigate the moon's geology and search for water and other volatile substances in permanently shadowed craters. Such resources could potentially be processed into drinking water, breathable air, or rocket fuel.

To conduct its research, MAGPIE will be equipped with four key instruments: a drill, a volatile analyzer, ground-penetrating radar, and a neutron detector. The mission is part of ESA's Moon Explore initiative, aiming to develop agile and cost-effective capabilities for sustainable lunar exploration.
