ESA MAGPIE lunar rover mission

Overview

The European Space Agency (ESA) has initiated plans for its first lunar rover mission, known as MAGPIE (Mission for Advanced Geophysics and Polar Ice Exploration), which is scheduled for launch in 2029.

Following a formal agreement signed with ispace-Europe in Copenhagen, the mission aims to explore the lunar South Pole. The rover is designed to investigate subsurface geology and search for water and other volatile substances in permanently shadowed craters. These resources are of interest for potential use as drinking water, breathable air, or rocket fuel.

The rover will be equipped with a drill, a volatile analyzer, ground-penetrating radar, and a neutron detector. The mission, which will launch aboard ispace’s fourth lunar lander with support from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), represents a strategic shift for the ESA toward cost-effective, commercial partnerships to develop sustainable lunar exploration capabilities.
