ESA and Pokémon partner for European space science outreach

The European Space Agency (ESA) and The Pokémon Company International have launched a collaborative project to promote scientific outreach and aerospace exploration to the general public. The initiative is timed to coincide with World Space Week 2026, scheduled for October 4–10.

The partnership was symbolically marked by the return of a Pikachu plushie from the International Space Station. The toy remained in orbit for 67 days during ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot's mission, completing more than 1,000 orbits around Earth.

A central component of the program is a joint educational exhibition designed to combine visual storytelling with scientific content. The exhibits will cover topics such as launch systems, orbital life support, solar activity monitoring, and solar system exploration.

The exhibition tour will debut during the ESA Open Days 2026 at agency locations in Paris, Frascati, Noordwijk, Darmstadt, Villanueva de la Cañada, and Harwell. Beginning in October 2027, the tour will expand to major European scientific and museum hubs, including the Cité de l'espace in Toulouse, the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias in Valencia, the Deutsches Museum in Nuremberg, the Euro Space Center in Belgium, the Science Museum in London, and the Lucca Comics & Games event in Italy.
