ESA tests Mars rover prototype in Spain's Tabernas Desert

The European Space Agency (ESA) and Airbus have completed field testing of the 'Charlie' rover prototype in the Tabernas Desert, Almería, Spain. The testing serves as preparation for the ExoMars mission, which is scheduled for launch in 2028.

The prototype, Charlie, shares mechanical configurations with the future Rosalind Franklin rover. These tests were designed to simulate Martian surface conditions and train ground control operators, based in Turin, Italy, in autonomous operational protocols. This is critical due to the communication delays between Earth and Mars, which prevent real-time remote control.

The actual Rosalind Franklin mission is expected to land on Mars in 2030, specifically targeting the Oxia Planum region. The rover will utilize a specialized drill to reach depths of up to two meters to search for organic molecules and signs of past or present life, protected from surface radiation.
