ESA ExoMars rover prototype testing

Overview

The European Space Agency (ESA) and Airbus have conducted field testing of the ‘Charlie’ rover prototype in the Tabernas Desert in Almería, Spain. The testing environment was selected for its landscape similarity to the Oxia Planum site on Mars.

These trials focused on autonomous navigation, obstacle detection, and scientific surface operations. The tests allowed technicians at the Rover Operations Control Centre in Turin, Italy, to practice remote operations via satellite link and manage autonomous protocols, which is essential due to the communication delays expected during the actual mission.

The testing serves as preparation for the ExoMars Rosalind Franklin mission, which is currently targeting a launch in 2028 and a landing on Mars in 2030. The mission aims to search for signs of past or present life by using a specialized drill to reach depths of up to two meters below the Martian surface.
