České dráhy wins 165 billion CZK rail contract for Prague and Central Bohemia

České dráhy (ČD) has won a historic 30-year contract to operate regional rail services in Prague and the Central Bohemian Region. The tender, valued at approximately 165.17 billion CZK, includes the procurement of a new fleet of high-capacity electric trains known as EMU 400.

Škoda Group was selected as the vehicle supplier with a bid of 36.39 billion CZK, a decision currently being challenged by Stadler Rail at the Office for the Protection of Competition (ÚOHS). The contract is being co-financed equally by the Central Bohemian Region and the City of Prague.

The deal has faced scrutiny from the Fair Rail association, which raised concerns regarding the final price being higher than initial estimates and the unusual 30-year duration of the contract. However, some reports note that the final figures include inflation adjustments over the three-decade period. The finalization of the agreement remains subject to the conclusion of the ÚOHS proceedings regarding the train manufacturer.
