Eskişehir agricultural leaders report high honey yields and crop planning concerns

Agricultural leaders in Eskişehir, Turkey, are reporting mixed outcomes for the current season, highlighting both successes in honey production and systemic challenges in vegetable farming.

Yılmaz Aşçı, President of the Eskişehir Beekeepers Association, stated that honey and pollen yields have been highly successful following two years of drought. While rainfall has presented management difficulties for bees, the association noted that honey prices remain competitive, with jars ranging from 700 to 2,000 lira. The association aims to increase the number of beekeepers to ensure sustainable production.

In contrast, Yıldıran Kılıç, President of the Eskişehir Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Producers Association, warned of the need for better production planning to prevent market volatility. Kılıç noted that a lack of planning leads to cycles where overproduction causes prices to crash, sometimes leaving half of the produce in the fields. He reported that waste can reach up to 72 percent by the time products reach consumers and criticized the intermediary system for reducing producer profits.
