Turkish agricultural sector trends and harvests

Overview

Turkish agricultural sectors continue to navigate a complex landscape of seasonal harvests and mounting economic pressures. The Turkish Grain Board (TMO) has officially commenced hazelnut purchases for the 2026-2027 season, establishing prices of 255 TL for Giresun quality and 250 TL for Levant quality.

Economic strain remains a critical issue for many producers. In Erzincan, bean farmers report that the rising costs of fuel, fertilizer, and pesticides are outpacing market prices, threatening production sustainability. In Edirne, despite lower tomato prices, consumer demand remains low due to diminished purchasing power. To address these challenges, local municipalities have stepped in with targeted aid: Manisa provided free eggplant seedlings following winter floods, Kocaeli distributed fertilizers and amino acids to hail-affected fruit growers, and Mardin launched a free stone-collection machine service to enhance soil productivity.

Regional successes and planning concerns also persist. In Eskişehir, the Beekeepers Association reported highly successful honey and pollen yields following a two-year drought, with honey prices ranging from 700 to 2,000 lira per jar. However, the Eskişehir Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Producers Association warned of systemic issues, noting that a lack of production planning leads to market volatility and significant waste. According to Yıldıran Kılıç, waste can reach up to 72 percent by the time products reach consumers, a situation exacerbated by an intermediary system that reduces producer profits. Other ongoing regional activities include aronia harvesting in Safranbolu and silage corn production in Karapınar.
