Esmeraldas and coastal regions in Ecuador face flood and wave alerts

The Esmeraldas River has experienced a sudden rise in water levels, triggering an orange alert due to the risk of flooding in low-lying and riverside areas. The Association of Integral Risk Managers (AGIR) attributes this increase to heavy rainfall in the western mountain range, which has caused water to flow from the upper basin. Additionally, the Blanco and Viche rivers are overflowing, placing nearby populations under surveillance. In some areas, such as the islands of Luis Vargas Torres and Prado Viteri, residents are facing difficulties moving due to accumulated water and mud.

Simultaneously, the Oceanographic and Antarctic Institute of the Navy (Inocar) has issued warnings for 41 coastal locations across Ecuador, including Esmeraldas, Manabí, Santa Elena, El Oro, Guayas, and Galápagos. The alert, which remains in effect until October 12, 2026, warns of agitated to very agitated sea conditions. Twenty-seven locations are under high threat, while 14 are under medium threat. Authorities advise tourists to respect safety flags, specifically noting that red flags indicate dangerous conditions where entering the sea should be avoided.
