ESO to compensate Lithuanian customers for storm-related power losses
Following a severe storm in Lithuania that caused widespread power outages and one fatality, the energy distribution operator ESO has announced a simplified compensation scheme for private customers. Customers who experienced electricity supply disruptions lasting longer than 72 hours due to the storm on August 22 are eligible for compensation for direct losses, up to a maximum of 220 euros.
Eligible claims include up to 60 euros for spoiled food, up to 60 euros per day for temporary accommodation costs, and up to 40 euros per day for generator rental or purchase costs. Requests can be submitted via the ESO self-service portal starting September 1, provided they are accompanied by supporting documentation such as receipts.
As of Thursday morning, approximately 62,000 customers remained without power, though 78 percent of residents and businesses have had service restored. The Lithuanian government has declared a state of emergency. To assist in restoration efforts, energy distribution brigades from Poland are expected to join Lithuanian crews to help restore full service by the end of the week.
