Espoo police Taser use investigation after man with disability dies

A criminal investigation has been launched following the death of a man with a disability in Espoo, Finland, after police used a Taser. The incident occurred at a Rinnekodit residential service unit in Lakisto after staff requested police assistance due to the individual's aggressive behavior.

During a struggle between a two-person police patrol and the man, an officer deployed a Taser. The man fell, lost consciousness, and subsequently died in the hospital. Prosecutors noted that the man was not armed with a weapon or any other dangerous object. Authorities stated that because of the individual's specific characteristics, there is suspicion that the use of force may have violated police regulations.

Rinnekodit conducted an internal review and stated that no errors or negligence were found in the actions of their staff. The company reported that personnel resources were adequate and that the staff on-site were experienced, trained, and followed organizational instructions. Rinnekodit expressed that the situation is exceptionally serious and taxing, offering condolences to the deceased's family.
