EsSalud: New president pledges reform amid legislative summons
Zulema Tomás Gonzales has officially assumed the Executive Presidency of the Social Health Insurance (EsSalud) in Peru. In her inaugural message, she pledged to restore institutional order, strengthen services, and ensure the supply of medications. She emphasized that the institution must prioritize patients, specifically addressing the issue of long waiting times for medical appointments and surgeries.
Simultaneously, the Health Commission of the Chamber of Deputies has summoned Tomás and the Minister of Labor, Juan Sheput, to appear on September 29. The summons follows an institutional crisis and questions regarding service delays. Specific concerns raised by deputies include the breakdown of a linear accelerator at the Carlos Alberto Seguín Escobedo National Hospital in Arequipa, which forced oncology patients to seek private care, and various complaints filed by health unions against institutional officials.
