Essex and Suffolk coasts face flood alerts from high tides
The Environment Agency has issued flood alerts for several communities along the Essex and Suffolk coasts due to high tides and spring tide conditions. On Monday, September 28, flooding is expected to be possible between 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm in several locations.
In Essex, the alert covers a stretch from Clacton to St Peters Flat, including Jaywick, Brightlingsea, Mersea Island, Heybridge, Maldon, and the Colne and Blackwater estuaries. Specific areas at risk include Clacton Promenade, Lee-over-Sands, and the Brightlingsea seafront, where wave overtopping and sea spray are possible. Inland flooding may affect The Strood at Mersea Island, West Mersea, and the Hythe and Promenade at Maldon.
In Suffolk, flood gates on the Felixstowe seafront are being closed. Alerts are in force from Southwold to the Essex border, impacting the Deben, Orwell, and Stour estuaries. Potential flooding is forecast for Pin Mill, the Orwell Bridge area, and the Mistley quay. A separate alert for the tidal Deben estuary covers areas from Felixstowe Ferry to Ufford, including Woodbridge and Waldringfield. Additionally, an alert for Southwold warns of flooding between 10:00 am and midday.
Authorities advise residents and visitors to remain vigilant, avoid flooded areas, and stay away from coastal roads, footpaths, and car parks that may be affected by rising water levels.
