Estado de México completes forest restoration and issues wildfire alert

The State of Mexico has concluded its 2026 Forest Restoration Season, successfully restoring 2,007 hectares of forest. According to the Secretariat of the Environment and Sustainable Development (SMAyDS), more than 2.06 million plants were distributed to recover forest zones in protected areas and priority regions, including Sierra de Guadalupe, Sierra de Tepotzotlán, Sierra Patlachique, Cerro Gordo, Sierra Hermosa, the Bosque de Agua, and Nevado de Toluca.

These efforts aim to promote biodiversity, facilitate rainwater infiltration, and recharge aquifers to mitigate climate change effects.

Simultaneously, Probosque (the State of Mexico Forest Protectorate) has issued a preventive alert regarding the risk of forest fires for late 2026 and early 2027. Director General Alejandro Sánchez Vélez noted that atmospheric variations and the drying of vegetation accumulated during the rainy season increase fire risks. Prevention efforts are being intensified, with particular focus on the southern region, specifically the Tejupilco area, which represents a significant operational challenge due to its size.
