State of Mexico forest restoration efforts
Overview
Since 2024, the State of Mexico has utilized the Forest Protector of the State of Mexico (Probosque) to restore gallery forests. This initiative involves planting native species like ahuehuetes, willows, and ailes to serve as natural filters, protect against flooding, and establish biological corridors. Early efforts covered over 510 kilometers across municipalities such as Timilpan, Tejupilco, Atlacomulco, Coatepec Harinas, and Valle de Bravo.
By late 2026, the state concluded its forest restoration season, having successfully restored 2,007 hectares. The Secretariat of the Environment and Sustainable Development (SMAyDS) reported that more than 2.06 million plants were distributed to recover priority regions, including Sierra de Guadalupe, Sierra de Tepotzotlán, Sierra Patlachique, Cerro Gordo, Sierra Hermosa, the Bosque de Agua, and Nevado de Toluca. These actions are intended to promote biodiversity and recharge aquifers.
Following these restoration efforts, Probosque issued a preventive alert for forest fire risks for late 2026 and early 2027. Director General Alejandro Sánchez Vélez cited atmospheric variations and drying vegetation as primary drivers of this risk, noting that prevention efforts are being intensified in the southern Tejupilco area.
