Estado de México collects 15 tons of electronic waste

The Government of the State of Mexico, through the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (SMAyDS), has collected over 15 tons of unused electrical and electronic equipment between January and July via the ‘ElectroRecicla’ campaign.

The initiative targeted various state government offices and agencies, including the State Human Rights Commission (CODHEM) and the Electoral Institute of the State of Mexico (IEEM). Participants were able to exchange obsolete devices—such as televisions, cell phones, tablets, laptops, printers, and chargers—for ecological bags and trees.

The collected waste is transferred to the Mexican Association of Electrical and Electronic Recyclers (AMREE), where items are classified, weighed, and disassembled. This process allows for the recovery of valuable components, including electronic boards, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, cables, and plastics, which can be reintegrated into new production cycles. The campaign aims to ensure the proper final disposal of electronic waste (e-waste) to prevent environmental damage from hazardous substances and promote a circular economy.
